Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Playoff Climax
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
